Bob Harris joins Jeff Mans on this week’s podcast to discuss how he got started in fantasy football. It wasn’t an easy road. He was living with his grandmother at 38 to try and make this work. One MANS Opinion: Episode 9 – The Fantasy Sports Business
Thursday Mar 26, 2020
Thursday Mar 26, 2020
Jeff Mans has Ray Flowers on the show to give his insight on how cut-throat this business can really be. Ray’s been in this business full-time for 19 years and knows that getting started and getting serious with fantasy sports is tough when you have a full-time job or other things on your plate. A lot of fantasy sports companies are closing down right now or doing massive layoffs and that’s because they’re just hobbyists who never took this seriously in the first place. If you want good guys to bleed with you when you lose and celebrate with you when you win, then you gotta look for the real guys that are 100% committed to this like Jeff and Ray.
Key Takeaways:
[2:15] Jeff is itching for a sports fix and it seems ESPN and all those guys don’t even know what they’re even doing.
[4:50] Sports is an escape for everyone and even if there is nothing on, it’s not going to stop Jeff and Ray from talking about it.
[10:30] This is Ray’s 19th year doing this full-time. Everyone is shutting their doors because they’re hobbyists that don’t take this seriously.
[14:00] When did Ray first learn about fantasy sports?
[17:00] When did Ray realize he could actually make a living in this industry?
[22:25] Ray’s first full-time job in this industry, he made $28,800 a year.
[26:15] People shouldn’t be jealous or want to punish the business owner for taking on the risk and being successful. America needs businesses and the people who create them.
[27:00] One of the worst things to happen to this industry was the way it got started.
[33:00] A lot of fantasy companies are shutting down because of this virus thing.
[40:05] People will pay for good work.
[42:10] What sets Elite Fantasy and Fantasy Guru apart from all the others is the dedication to delivering good and valuable content to the users.
[45:55] The most important people are your followers and your fans. Take care of those people.
[53:00] There are people in this industry that will shield their picks from paying customers. What kind of logic is that!
[53:55] Jeff and Ray’s job is to make you win. That’s their job!
[57:00] People give Jeff’s wife crap because she’s a stay-at-home-mom now, but they don’t see the part when she was with Jeff when he wasn’t a provider and making zero money. In a partnership, you help each other and you make sacrifices.
[1:09:50] How did Jeff first meet Ray?
[1:19:00] Why did Ray decide to take the leap and work with Jeff?

One MANS Opinion: Episode 8 – My Old Man
Tuesday Mar 24, 2020
Tuesday Mar 24, 2020
In an emotional unveiling, Jeff Mans discusses for the first time publicly the story of his Father who grew up as an Illinois Farmer, went to war for his country, battled depression, alcoholism and cancer in what became a most inspiring life story. It’s a story of family, a story of courage and a story of life. If you want to understand Mans, hear the true story of what inspires him. Jeff’s old man is his hero, but it took a long time for him to be that way. Jeff was the youngest of five children and everybody hated his dad. Jeff’s dad was an alcoholic, had no relationship with his wife, and was abusive to Jeff’s disabled brother. His dad was a Korean War vet, but he turned a corner when he had cancer in 1991 and he repaired the relationship he had with his wife, his kids, and his siblings. For that, Jeff is very grateful for being able to see the man he truly was.
Key Takeaways:
[3:10] Despite being in quarantine, Jeff is still working full time.
[5:20] You guys have been asking Jeff a lot about his youth.
[5:45] What motivates Jeff? His old man.
[8:55] Jeff has been finding creative ways to spend time with the family without leaving the house.

[15:00] Jeff’s old man and his siblings grew up so poor that they didn’t even celebrate Christmas or birthdays (and neither did Jeff).
[16:55] His dad served in the Korean war and he had some gruesome stories to share with Jeff.
[20:00] It was obvious Jeff was a mistake. Jeff’s youngest sister is 13 years older than him.
[23:00] His old man’s alcoholism was so bad and he was abusive when Jeff was growing up.
[24:00] Jeff’s dad is still his hero.
[28:30] Jeff was becoming a bad kid before his older brother moved his family away from all of that. Crime gangs were recruiting kids as young as 11 years old.
[29:25] Jeff had no relationship with his dad.
[34:25] Everything changed in 1991 when his dad got diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
[38:55] It changed the man completely. He became Jeff’s best friend.
[43:05] The whole family was bonding again and his dad was able to tell happier memories of his childhood.
[43:15] Then the cancer came back.
[46:55] His dad always told him to pursue a career or a job that made him happy. Do something you want to do, not because you have to.
[50:40] His dad became an alcoholic because he never could give his parents and his family a good life.
